Forums:

When home computers first became ‘affordable’, there was no Internet. There was no broadband or DSL, in fact, 300 baud modems were standard. BBS’s (Bulletin Board Systems) were all there was to connect to.

A BBS was dedicated to a particular subject, and gave other computer addicts a place to read messages, post new subjects, and respond to other people’s posts.

They were today’s forums! Actually, today’s forums pretty much look like yesterday’s BBS’s, except they don’t have download sections. ;)

Forums now, like their predecessors, are valuable places to find information on whatever topic you are researching. However, you must also remember that nobody verifies most of the information contained on forums, so you must take the information you find with a grain of salt, and use some common sense.

Almost all programs also have their own forums. Be wary of those that don’t. Forums are a cheap, easy and interactive way for you to help your members, and for members to help each other. I strongly advise people to join (and at least check regularly) the forum for each program they join.

But to get an unbiased overview of programs, it is necessary to rely also on third party forums, such as those listed in the sidebar of this page. There are literally thousands of related forums on the Internet; I have only listed those that stand out (in my personal opinion).
